The image featured as the background of this website is of the Hartigan house in Rencontre East. The view is of the dilapidated wharf looking up the hill toward the remains of the house which was once the home of a thriving herring industry. When arriving in Rencontre Bay, there is a large wooded peninsula to the right. This became known as "Hartigan's Point." Today it's just called "the point" as there are no longer any Hartigans there, nor have they been since the 1950's. Due to the depression that was sweeping the island at the time because of poor fishing and lack of industry, the last of the Hartigans left Newfoundland for the United States. Below you will see a satellite image from Google of Rencontre East, along with some photos from our trips back to the isolated town. Click on them for more detail.
